Different Grades of Stainless Steel Used for Jewelry – Make Your Purchase Easy

Stainless steel is an alloy that combines two or more metals, and it is done to improve the strength and other characteristics like corrosion resistance and reduce the cost. Stainless steel consists of chromium, making it a suitable metal for stainless steel jewelry as it is corrosive resistant.

Based on their grade, stainless steel will contain metals like nickel, titanium, copper, or molybdenum, as well as a trace of other elements. These elements will only enhance the properties of the Jewelry.

If you are looking for earrings, headpins, clasps, or other jewellery-making components, the jewelers can offer an extensive selection of stainless steel jewelry available in different steel grades.

Understanding the grades can help you make an informed decision when purchasing a jewelry component.

Some of the grades are mentioned below for your understanding.

304 grade – It is the most common grade in stainless steel and comprises iron, eighteen per cent of chromium and eight per cent of nickel, and a maximum of 0.08% of carbon. The alloy is non-magnetic but is easy to manipulate and is excellently resistant to corrosion. This grade is strong and lightweight, which makes it an excellent choice for jewelry.

316 grade – It is the second most common grade of stainless steel and is often referred to as marine grade stainless steel. The prominent difference between the two grades is that 316 grades have two to three per cent of molybdenum, which improves corrosion resistance even in the harshest environment. The additional molybdenum makes it slightly high-priced.

403 grade –This grade of stainless steel, compared to the two above, has a lesser percentage of elements, making it one of the less expensive stainless steel jewelry alloys. Comparatively, it is lesser corrosive resistant.

As a buyer of stainless steel jewelry with the knowledge of the grade, you can choose the alloy from which the jewelry that is best suited to your skin and environment can be made.
